Norma Lagacy heard a loud noise.

It “shook the whole place,” she recalled Friday morning.

The noise Lagacy heard was an SUV hitting a support pillar for the Murphy Road overpass on Guthrie Drive East around 12:30 a. m., according to Sarnia police. The only person inside the vehicle, a man, was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead.

“The deceased is a 28-year-old male. Police will not be releasing his name,” police said.

Lagacy, who lives on Guthrie Drive just east of the overpass, was one of the first people at the scene after hearing the crash. She mentioned that there was no movement inside the vehicle.

“We kept yelling and there’s no movement,” she said.

Amid all the airbags, all they could see was a bit of what looked like a plaid shirt, she added.

The vehicle involved was a white Volkswagen Tiguan. It had significant damage and one of its tires was torn off. Two Sarnia police officers were present at the scene Friday morning.

Sarnia police stated that traffic reconstruction officers will continue their investigation. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has surveillance footage is urged to call Const. Mike Ross of the traffic services unit at 519-344-8861.

This marks the second deadly accident in Sarnia-Lambton this week. Two people lost their lives and another individual was injured in a collision Tuesday afternoon in Plympton-Wyoming.

A commercial vehicle collided with a passenger car at Lakeshore Road and Aberarder Line around 2 p. m. Two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene while another suffered minor injuries, Lambton OPP reported.
