A law firm proposes names like ‘Little Dictator Lake,’ ‘Felon Lake,’ ‘Crooked Lake’ or ‘Ego Lake,’ among others.
A lawyer from Sault Ste. Marie quickly reacted today after President Donald Trump’s announcement to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America.
After chatting with his team, Jeff Broadbent from Broadbent Law went on social media to share his thoughts:
Today, Trump made a pointless order changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America.
In northern Ontario, we have a lake currently called Trump Lake.
We believe it should be renamed and welcome suggestions. For example, we like “Little Dictator Lake,” “Crooked Lake,” “Felon Lake,” “Ego Lake,” or “Grifter Lake,” among others. What do you think?
Village Media reached out to Broadbent by phone for more details about the post.
“It came from me and our team. These are tough times. Like most people, I find myself feeling stressed about what Trump is doing,” he mentioned.
“It’s offensive and it’s meaningless. He has no power to change the name of the lake. We can either respond as he wants us to or we can just laugh at it.”
“Finding humor in it is healthier.”
Broadbent said he’s landed his plane on and fished in Trump Lake, located north of Chapleau in northeastern Ontario.
“It’s not exactly great for fishing. It’s true to its name,” he chuckled.
“That was really the spirit behind my post. I thought ‘let’s have some fun with this.’ I’m not sure if things will get better anytime soon. I have many American friends who feel embarrassed.”
“Some of them support Trump and even they are embarrassed.”
When asked if he had a favorite suggestion for renaming Trump Lake, Broadbent said: “I like our suggestions; maybe Little Hand Lake-who knows?”
As much as he’d prefer to laugh off Trump’s behavior, Broadbent acknowledged that we need to take him seriously too.
“I think Carney is correct that our world has changed. It’s pretty clear that Trump admires dictators.”
“We need to remember that while finding some laughs, we should also take this dangerous person seriously.”
Prime Minister Mark Carney also took to social media regarding Trump’s attempt to rename Lake Ontario.
“The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which fittingly means ‘the lake is beautiful, the lake is big.’”
“This name is over 400 years old and predates both Canada’s Confederation and the United States Declaration of Independence,” Carney stated in his post.
“We understand that America is evolving-its trade relationships, foreign policies, national monuments, and hydronyms.”
“Canadians also recognize that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario-now and forever.”
