The City of Sarnia is hosting an information session next week for anyone interested in running for the 2026 Ontario Municipal Election.
This session, provided by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, will be held on Tuesday, April 21, at 5 p. m. in the council chambers at city hall.
City Clerk Amy Burkhart mentioned they’ll cover various topics related to the election process, requirements, and roles.
“The campaign process does have some very specific rules, processes and requirements to ensure compliance with the Municipal Elections Act. So, we are hosting the session to help any prospective candidates or third-party advertisers better understand the process, and participate with a full understanding,” Burkhart said.
Topics discussed will include:
How to file to run for election through the nomination process.
Campaign finances such as rules, expenses and contribution limits.
The roles and responsibilities of the compliance audit committee.
No registration is required.
Nominations for the 2026 municipal election begin on May 1, 2026.
Currently, one seat has been announced as open for the next term.
Veteran City/County Councillor Dave Boushy revealed his retirement from politics earlier this week.
