Stratford, Ont., Mayor Martin Ritsma couldn’t hide his excitement as he played I’m So Excited by The Pointer Sisters while standing next to a green and white GO train at the station Friday morning.

“Good things come to those who wait,” he shared during a news conference. “It’s a little bit like Christmas. Last night I didn’t sleep much, hoping that what I’d wished for would show up this morning.”

Ritsma’s big news was that starting July 6, Stratford will have daily GO train service connecting his southern Ontario city to Toronto.

Ritsma mentioned that this announcement is great news for workers, students, and tourists living in or visiting Stratford.

Daily GO train service coming to Stratford

Stratford, Ont., will get daily GO train service starting July 6. On weekdays, the train will head from Stratford to Toronto’s Union Station in the mornings and return in the evenings. On weekends, it will start in Toronto and bring people to Stratford in the mornings before heading back later in the day.

During weekdays, trains will leave Stratford just after 6 a. m., arriving at Toronto before 9 a. m. The return journey from Toronto will depart around 5 p. m., reaching Stratford by approximately 7:30 p. m.

On weekends, trains will begin their journey in Toronto and transport visitors to Stratford during the mornings before returning later.

Ontario’s Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria and Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsey were present for the announcement in Stratford.

Sarkaria remarked that this new service aligns with the provincial government’s goal of fostering “a stronger, more resilient and self-reliant economy.”

“This new service will help drive economic growth in Stratford for years ahead. It’ll enhance connections throughout southwestern Ontario and make life easier for thousands who live here or visit annually,” Sarkaria noted.

He pointed out that over recent years, ridership on the Kitchener line has “skyrocketed.”

Perth-Wellington MPP Matthew Rae expressed that it was “a great day for Stratford and really Perth County.”

A pilot project launched back in 2021 which allowed GO trains to travel to London was cancelled by the province last October. That route also included stops at St. Marys and Stratford.

Sarkaria said they’ve seen ridership numbers on the Kitchener line soar recently.

“We believe that’s going to translate into stations like Stratford as well,” he added.
