Former Green MP Mike Morrice has announced he is one of two candidates approved to run for the leadership of his party.
Morrice shared his news Wednesday morning at The Museum in downtown Kitchener.
“Having served as a [member of parliament] already at a time when the party is looking for a leader in Canada as life continues to get more expensive for so many folks, I just believe that the party can be a vehicle for confronting the billionaire class and addressing the issues that ordinary folks both in our community and across the country continue to face,” Morris explained about his motivation for entering the leadership race.
Morrice represented Kitchener Centre as an MP for one term but lost his seat in April 2025’s federal election. Conservative Kelly De Ridder won against Morrice by 358 votes.

On November 28, 2025, Morrice was appointed deputy leader of the federal Greens and has already been named as their candidate for the next federal election whenever it may happen.
“The way we grow the membership is the same way we’re gonna grow a green caucus in Ottawa,” he stated.
“It’s by working alongside other progressives to build a movement of people who are ready to confront the billionaire class and how they’ve been hoarding wealth over these last many years, along with political leaders who’ve made it possible all along, right up to today’s prime minister.”

The Green Party of Canada officially kicked off its five-month leadership contest on June 11.
Green Party Leader Elizabeth May revealed during summer 2025 her intention to step down but will stay on until November.
May currently serves as the only Green MP in Parliament. She was first elected leader of her party back in 2006. After stepping down in 2019 following Annamie Paul’s election, she returned as leader again in 2022.

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May has stated she won’t lead into another federal election. As reported by CBC’s Katie De Rosa, May explained that her efforts toward finding a successor have not gone well previously.
A press release ahead of February’s Ontario elections highlighted Dookeran’s involvement as a provincial candidate back in 2022 and her decade-long volunteer work with Ontario’s Green Party managing various campaigns. Dookeran’s page on Canada’s Green Party website mentions that this leadership race “comes at a defining moment” in its history. “Electoral stagnation, centralized decision-making, and an increasingly unclear public identity have brought us to a crossroads. What we choose now will shape the next decade of federal Green politics,” it continued.![]()

Morrice agrees with this statement saying they share “a lot in common.”
“We have common values and that’s what’s most important,” he noted. “Nira has run many times as a Green before and she’s exactly who we need continuing forward.” “I’m glad she’s in the race.”The voting period for choosing Canada’s next Green Party leader will occur from Nov. 2 until Nov. 13 with results expected on Nov.14.
