It’s hard to find the right words for the deep sadness we feel at losing our dear husband and father, John. He left us peacefully with his wife and two daughters by his side at the Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH) on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at the age of 64.
John was a loving husband to Maria (née Adamo), with whom he shared a wonderful 28-year marriage. They loved traveling, trying new foods, taking walks, playing Scrabble, and doing crosswords together. He was also a proud father to Joanna and Angela, who both adored him deeply.
He is predeceased by his parents, Fergus and Lena Murtha. His mother-in-law Teresa Adamo (late Arturo) will miss him greatly. John was a caring brother to Kathy (late John), Phil (Diane), Patricia Harrison (Ed), and Colleen Fraser (Mike). He was a beloved uncle to Naythan (Michelle), Christopher, Collin, and great-nephew Owyn. His brothers-in-law David and Mark Adamo will also remember him fondly. Many friends and extended family across Canada and Ireland will keep his memory alive.
Born in Lindsay, Ontario, John made lasting friendships there that he cherished throughout his life. He had a special friendship with Guy Skipworth that lasted over 60 years. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the guys in the Scugog Poker crew for their lifelong camaraderie.
John took pride in being a radio broadcaster for most of his 35-year career in Sault Ste. Marie; his recognizable voice filled the airwaves with local news that mattered to him. He had many opportunities during his career to interview local officials as well as Premiers, Prime Ministers, and Olympians.
Sports were another love of John’s-whether it was playing them or cheering from the sidelines. Starting from age five playing hockey to soccer and baseball later on; recently he developed an interest in pickleball along with its local community of players. Even during treatment he found ways to continue playing. A devoted fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Blue Jays, and Raptors, he always hoped to see the Leafs win another Stanley Cup one day. John enjoyed coaching youth soccer for both of his daughters while practicing with them in their backyard.
Music was also close to John’s heart; countless hours were spent learning new songs on piano and guitar. We’ll really miss hearing him fill our home with song; he passed on this passion for music to his daughters while accompanying them to their violin and piano lessons. His version of “American Pie” will surely be missed at family gatherings.
John’s legacy is one of kindness-he was selfless and always put others first before himself. He cared deeply about making positive changes in his community through volunteering efforts such as supporting the Terry Fox Run, Heart & Stroke Foundation activities, and helping out at Salvation Army Food Bank; showing what it means truly means to be compassionate in quiet yet meaningful ways.
