Windsor’s unemployment rate went up 0.5 percent in March compared to February, reaching 8.5 percent.

This places the southwestern Ontario border city as having Canada’s third highest jobless rate – tied with Barrie – only surpassed by Kitchener-Waterloo at 8.6 percent and London at 9.1 percent.

The figures represent a three-month moving average for major cities. The national unemployment rate was reported at 6.7 percent in March, according to Statistics Canada. These numbers can vary significantly due to small statistical samples, as noted by the government agency.

Canada’s economy saw a slight increase of 14,000 jobs in March, recovering just a bit from the significant job losses that occurred during the first two months of the year.

The previous Labour Force Survey from February indicated a loss of 84,000 jobs, which took many economists and analysts by surprise.

In March, Justin Falconer mentioned that the addition of 1,700 jobs from the new third shift at Windsor’s Stellantis plant wouldn’t be reflected immediately in the statistics.

“It’s going to take three full months of numbers before the full positive impact of that third shift is going to be felt in our unemployment numbers,” said the CEO of Workforce Windsor Essex earlier.

Falconer represents a community organization focused on creating labor market strategies.

“The news is sort of ahead of these numbers in the survey.”
