York Regional Police are alerting the public about a cellphone upgrade scam that’s targeting customers in the telecommunications sector.
According to a news release, the scammers impersonate telecommunications agents and offer enticing deals such as discounts, free upgrades, or other promotions. They persuade victims to order phones, tablets, or add new lines using their real accounts.
Once the devices arrive, these scammers falsely claim there was an error in shipping and provide fake return labels or QR codes. The devices sent back are then redirected to the suspects, leaving victims responsible for payments and monthly fees for the devices.
On August 13, police conducted a search at a residence in Markham and found around $40,000 worth of mobile phones and tablets. A 22-year-old man from Markham, Boran Sun, has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime.
Authorities recommend that residents confirm any upgrades and return instructions directly with their telecommunications provider and avoid using return labels given by unsolicited callers or messages.
If you have any information regarding this scam, please reach out to York Regional Police or Crime Stoppers.
