Swimming is not safe at the beaches in Port Elgin and Southampton because of high bacteria levels.

Grey Bruce Public Health announced on Wednesday morning that the beaches were posted unsafe after water sample results revealed bacterial levels above Ontario Ministry of Health standards.

The beach postings will stay in effect until new samples confirm that bacteria levels have dropped to a safe range for swimming and bathing, according to the health unit.

“While we know residents and visitors want to enjoy these final weeks of August and make the most of summer, we respectfully ask that everyone follow this advisory and avoid swimming at Port Elgin Main Beach and Southampton Beach until the postings are lifted,” Senior Public Health Manager Chimere Okoronkwo said in a news release. “Swimming in water with elevated levels can increase the risk of illness or infection.”

Samples were collected earlier this week by public health as part of their summer beach monitoring program that tests water quality at popular beaches in Grey-Bruce for E. coli levels. More samples are set to be taken on Thursday.

The public health department advises residents and visitors to stay away from swimming or playing in the beach water at both locations and not to let pets drink or play in the water until the advisories are lifted.

Even if beaches aren’t marked unsafe, it’s recommended that people check water conditions before swimming or playing. Avoid swimming for 24 to 48 hours after heavy rain or when you can’t see your feet in waist-deep water.

Bacterial levels above provincial guidelines can lead to skin infections, eye issues, ear problems, throat infections, or gastrointestinal illnesses.
