Brampton Councillor Rejoins Ontario Municipal Board

Brampton Regional Councillor Paul Vicente’s return to the board of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) is happening at a crucial moment for the city’s fast growth.

Vicente has been reappointed to the AMO board for another two years, ensuring Brampton has a voice as municipalities across Ontario seek more support from the provincial government on various issues like infrastructure, housing, transit, and health care.

Since 2020, Vicente has been part of the AMO board and received backing from municipal peers throughout Ontario for his new term.

AMO represents nearly all municipalities in Ontario and plays a vital role in forming municipal policy stances, collaborating with provincial officials, and advocating for local governments and their communities.

For Brampton, Vicente’s reappointment comes as the city seeks substantial provincial investments to accommodate its rapidly growing population.

At this week’s 2026 AMO Annual Conference, representatives from Brampton engaged with provincial leaders and municipal partners while emphasizing four key priorities: transit, housing-enabling infrastructure, health care, and community safety.

Transit is a significant concern; the city is advocating for advancements on projects like the Hazel Mc Callion Light Rail Transit line and the Queen Street-Highway 7 Bus Rapid Transit project along with transit electrification and other transportation upgrades.

Brampton is also looking for provincial help with water and wastewater capacity, community facilities, and other infrastructure essential to support new housing and its growing population.

Health care remains another critical issue.

The city continues to push for its second hospital, a comprehensive Cancer Care Centre at Brampton Civic Hospital, along with support from the province to start planning a third hospital.

Brampton also seeks ongoing investment in William Osler Health System’s partnership with Toronto Metropolitan University’s School of Medicine aimed at training and retaining more doctors within the community.

Community safety and well-being complete the city’s list of priorities including enhancements to justice system capacity, mental health services, homelessness prevention strategies, community-based interventions, and emergency services.

This makes Vicente’s position on AMO especially significant.

The organization gives municipalities a collective voice at Queen’s Park while allowing local governments to influence provincial policies that directly impact municipal services and funding.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown stated that having Vicente back on the board strengthens the city’s presence in an important advocacy forum for municipalities.

“Having a Brampton representative on the AMO Board helps ensure the needs of our residents are part of province-wide discussions,” Brown said while highlighting that there are urgent needs in transit infrastructure development as well as health care improvements.

Vicente expressed eagerness about continuing to bring Brampton’s views forward while collaborating with other municipalities across Ontario on shared challenges.

For Brampton these challenges are increasingly pressing given its continued expansion.

Vicente’s term from 2026-2028 ensures that Brampton will once again have representation during discussions with provincial authorities – especially as it pushes for necessary investments needed to match its growth rate.
