사진 확대 Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik went on a business trip to support the Canadian submarine (CPSP) order worth 60 trillion won (approx. It is expected to help Hanwha Ocean and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, which are competing with Germany’s Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems (TKMS).

Director Kang boarded a flight to Canada on the evening of the 31st of last month. “Korea-Canada relations are rapidly expanding across the economy, energy, and high-tech industries,” Kang said through X. “The economic and industrial structures of the two countries are complementary to each other and synergy is very great as a global middle power in the face of the prolonged Middle East crisis.”

He added, “As it is the second special envoy visit in four months, we will do our best to achieve practical results in expanding strategic cooperation between the two countries in energy, resources, supply chains, and high-tech industries.”

Kang also visited Canada in January as a special presidential envoy for strategic economic cooperation. At that time, Kang met with officials from the Canadian government and parliament one after another. He has seen the defense minister, the secretary of state, the industry minister, the finance minister, the prime minister’s chief of staff, and the chairman of the Senate Defense Committee. In February, he reunited with Stephen Pure, the special secretary for defense procurement, who visited South Korea.

This business trip is expected to discuss supply chain cooperation as well as defense. Political circles also predict that Kang will participate in the Korea-Canada Resource Security Supply Chain Cooperation Forum. The special envoys will be joined by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as companies and organizations in energy, resources, supply chains and high-tech industries.

Canada is pushing for CPSP to order 12 diesel submarines. In Korea, Hanwha Ocean and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries are competing with TKMS by proposing the 3,600-ton submarine Jang Bogo-III Arrangement-II.

The Canadian government is expected to announce the final operator later this month. South Korea is known to be competing on an equal footing with Germany, a member of North Atlantic Treaty Organization based on its excellent specifications.
