Researchers at Western University have confirmed yet another tornado from a series of major storms that hit southwestern Ontario last week.

The Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) reported finding proof that a tornado touched down in the Monkton, Ont., area on Sept. 2, along with evidence of a downburst occurring in Seaforth, Ont.

This brings the total number of tornadoes that struck southwestern Ontario on Sept. 2 and 3 to six, and it also raises the count of confirmed downbursts to three.

The confirmed tornadoes and downbursts now include:

An EF0 tornado, an EF1 tornado, and an EF0 downburst in Tavistock on Sept. 2. An EF1 tornado in Wellesley on Sept. 2. An EF1 tornado near Monkton and an EF1 downburst in Seaforth on Sept. 2. An EF1 tornado in Windsor on Sept. 3. An EF1 tornado and an EF1 downburst in Wheatley on Sept. 3.

Researchers categorize these events using the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which ranks both tornadoes and downbursts according to their wind speeds and damage caused. The scale starts at EF0 for the weakest storms and goes up to a maximum rating of EF5.

This farm located west of Monkton faced a partially destroyed barn, several destroyed grain bins, and a tornado path through the crops. (Northern Tornadoes Project)

The newly identified tornado near Monkton led to damage affecting crops, trees, and manmade structures as per the report from NTP.

“An NTP ground and drone survey was completed on September 8, 2026, documenting the reported damage along with damage to two farm buildings,” the report reads.

The tornado traveled from the west for about 4.91 kilometers toward Monkton at wind speeds reaching up to 150 km/h with a width estimated at around 50 meters.

In Seaforth, just west of Monkton, the downburst resulted in damage across several farm buildings, trees, and power poles as stated in the report.

The downburst is believed to have had an estimated maximum wind speed of 165 km/h causing damage over an area approximately 8.5 kilometers long and up to 3 kilometers wide.

NTP officials mentioned in their latest report that no additional surveys looking into damages reported during these storms are scheduled.
