It’s official – Brampton’s Mayor Patrick Brown is running for a third term.

Brown announced his candidacy on Tuesday and is now among eight candidates vying for the mayoral position in the upcoming municipal election this October.

“Together, we will continue to build, continue to deliver, and ensure Brampton can manage any challenge we face,” Brown stated in a social media post. “We will keep building a stronger and more prosperous future for our city.”

A spokesperson for the mayor confirmed to INsauga. com earlier this month that Brown intended to run again, although he had previously mentioned in October that he hadn’t officially decided yet due to the impending arrival of his third child.

Brown is married to Genevieve Gualtieri-Brown, who is also the daughter of Silvia Gualtier, the Progressive Conservative MPP for Mississauga East-Cooksville.

He was first elected as mayor of Brampton in 2018 amid allegations of sexual misconduct which he has denied. This led to a settlement with . Those accusations resulted in Brown being removed as leader of the Ontario PC party and replaced by Doug Ford, who later became premier.

He made an unsuccessful attempt to lead the Conservative Party of Canada in 2022 but was disqualified over claims that his campaign violated election finance rules. The Office of the Commissioner of Canada Elections cleared him of those allegations in 2024.

Brown won a second term in Brampton later that year with 59.65 percent of the vote. He competed against five other candidates – Nikki Kaur, Bob Dosanjh Singh, Vidya Sagar Gautam, Prabh Kaur Mand, and Tony Moracci. Kaur was his closest rival, securing around 25 percent of the vote.

This October, those challenging Brown include non-profit worker Sandeep Somal, entrepreneur Jagruti Bhatt, independent candidate for Brampton-Chinguacousy Park Avi Dhaliwal from the 2025 Ontario provincial election, Vidya Gautam, Gaurav Walia and Tirth Patel.

The election takes place on Oct. 26, with candidates having until Aug. 21 at 2 p. m. to enter the race.

During his time as mayor in Brampton, there have been various controversies including a group of City Councillors boycotting meetings in 2022 due to what they labeled an “authoritarian dictatorship” under Brown’s leadership; a halted forensic audit linked to the $629,000 Brampton U scandal; and alleged foreign interference during his leadership campaign in 2022.

If elected for another term, some priorities Brown plans to focus on include maintaining low taxes, ensuring community safety and completing Brampton’s second hospital.
