While trying to capture the animal overnight, it became ‘aggressive’ and due to the immediate safety threat, an officer discharged their weapon resulting in the dog’s death, police say

Early this morning, Barrie police found and killed the dog that had been loose and attacked an 11-year-old boy earlier in the week.

While attempting to capture the animal, it became “aggressive” and due to the immediate safety threat, an officer discharged their weapon resulting in the dog’s death, according to police.

Police said around 2:30 a. m. on June 11, officers received information that the dog was seen in the area of Tiffin Street and Patterson Road.

Officers arrived and confirmed it was indeed the dog that had been roaming since Monday when an 11-year-old boy suffered severe injuries during an attack by the dog, police say.

Police stated that the boy was taken to a local hospital where he is currently in stable condition.

The police continued searching for the dog throughout the week, using a drone as part of their efforts.

Witnesses who assisted the young boy shared their experiences with Barrie Today and mentioned he is ‘lucky to be alive’ after such a brutal attack.

Authorities acknowledged that incidents involving any animal’s death can be distressing for community members; “however, the actions taken by our officers were necessary to protect themselves and the community at large from an ongoing threat,” they said in a release.

Police believe several people may have been hurt by the dog and they are eager to speak with anyone who may have been bitten.

“Our thoughts are with those affected. We wish all those injured a full and speedy recovery,” police said.

The City of Barrie by-law officers are now investigating alongside police assistance.
