The province is looking into involuntary mental health and addiction treatment in jails, but no legislation has been introduced yet.
TORONTO – Ontario Premier Doug Ford has expressed that he’s open to exploring the concept of involuntary addiction treatment.
The Big City Mayors group in Ontario recently reiterated their request for the province to examine current mental health laws with a view to expanding involuntary treatment options.
The province is currently investigating involuntary mental health and addiction treatment within jails, but there has been no movement toward any legislative action thus far.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, homelessness and addiction rates have surged across the province, putting financial pressure on municipalities.
Ford mentioned he would be receptive to this controversial approach if it benefits individuals and communities.
While Health Minister Sylvia Jones hasn’t dismissed the idea outright, she has stated several times that she prefers voluntary treatment and is consulting with experts on the matter.
