Burlington, Ont.-April 30, 2026- The nomination period for those wishing to run as candidates in Burlington’s 2026 municipal election begins at 8:30 a. m. on Friday, May 1 and continues until 2 p. m. on Aug. 21, 2026.
To qualify as a candidate, you must be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old, and either reside in Burlington (whether you own or rent) or have property ownership in the city through yourself or your spouse.
Starting on May 1, nominations will be open for:
Mayor* Councillors* (one per ward) Trustees, Halton District School Board (4 total) 1 from wards 1&2 1 from wards 3&6 1 from ward 4 1 from ward 5 Trustees, Halton Catholic District School Board (3 total) 1 from wards 1&2 1 from wards 3&6 1 from wards 4&5
*The Mayor and City Councillors also serve on Halton Regional Council.
You can file nomination papers by appointment only at City Hall located at 426 Brant St., with the Office of the City Clerk during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a. m. to 4:30 p. m.). Please call 905-335-7777, ext. 7805 or email clerks@burlington. ca to schedule an appointment.
On the final day of the nomination period, Aug. 21, 2026, nominations can be submitted between the hours of 9 a. m. and 2 p. m.
Candidates aren’t allowed to start campaigning until their nomination papers have been officially filed.
The voting period for this election is set for Oct.14 -26, 2026.
Filing a nomination
Nomination forms are available online at myvoteburlington. ca. The following items need to be provided when submitting a nomination:
Nomination paper (Form 1) Endorsement of nomination (Form 2) – needed for council office nominations only. A council office nomination requires endorsement by at least 25 individuals. Each endorser must provide a prescribed declaration. Filing fee – can be paid in cash, certified cheque, money order (made out to the City of Burlington), Master Card or VISA. The fee for running as mayor is $200 and $100 for all other positions. Candidate identification – driver’s license or another form of government-issued photo ID. Proof of citizenship – Canadian passport, citizenship certificate or another government-issued identification.

**If approved, the proposed Better Regional Governance Act of 2026 will change the Halton Regional Chair position to one appointed by the province. Burlington’s election website will reflect updates if and when this Act receives Royal Assent.
