The city mentioned that firefighters used an excavator to break into sections of the building in order to extinguish some hot spots that were still smoldering. Due to significant structural damage and unsafe conditions, they decided with guidance from the Office of the Fire Marshal not to conduct an investigation and labeled the cause of the fire as undetermined. The statement confirmed that no injuries occurred and there’s currently no estimate for damages. The St. Catharines Standard, which also covered this incident, noted that the building has been empty since 2013 when the paper relocated. & copy 2025 The Canadian PressSource link
