Two motorcyclists lost their lives in separate crashes in Hamilton on Friday, highlighting the dangers of riding as the warm weather sets in.

The first accident took place just before 1 p. m. at the intersection of Concession 5 West and Kirkwall Road in Flamborough. According to police, a pickup truck collided with a motorcycle; sadly, the motorcyclist was declared dead at the scene, while the truck driver was unharmed.

The second fatal incident occurred shortly after 8 p. m. on the east mountain. A Harley Davidson motorcycle hit a Toyota RAV4 at the intersection of Pritchard Road and Harlowe Road. The male rider was taken to the hospital but unfortunately passed away later.

Local bikers say this news marks a heartbreaking start to the riding season.

“It’s disappointing, it’s sad,” said Aaron, a local motorcyclist. “It’s an amazing sport and to hear that two people died, it puts a bad name to the sport.”

Patrick, who works at Sturgess Cycle in Hamilton, noted that while this news is tragic, it’s not unexpected.

“Unfortunately, no surprise; it is kind of par for the course,” Patrick said. “Every year there is an uptick in motorcycle accidents at the beginning and end of the year.”

Ontario Provincial Police Const. Ed Sanchuk cautioned that springtime means drivers need to be more vigilant.

“The warmer weather is upon us and with warmer weather brings motorcycle enthusiasts,” Sanchuk said. “A reminder to the general public and motoring public: always make sure you check your blind spots.”

Sanchuk stressed that being extra careful at intersections is crucial. “Make sure you check twice before proceeding because it will save a life. If you have to, take three or four extra seconds to check.”

Safety experts are also advising riders to ensure their bikes are ready for use after being stored over winter. Patrick suggested bikers check tire pressures and ride as if they are invisible to other drivers.

“Ride with a lot more awareness. Understand that people are not going to see you, they are not ready for bikes yet,” Patrick said.

Aaron emphasized that safety gear shouldn’t be compromised. “Be aware, be safe, proper gear. Don’t cheap out, buy good gear. Wear it all the time. The one time you don’t wear it usually will be when something bad happens. And just stay off your phones.”

For drivers of cars, Aaron had a straightforward message: “Keep an eye out, go slow, use your blinkers and be aware that there’s going to be an uptick very soon and a lot of people on the road on bikes.”

Hamilton police are urging anyone who saw either crash or has dashcam footage from those areas to get in touch with investigators.
