Peterborough OPP are looking into a new scam reported in Douro-Dummer Township.

On March 13, 2026, Peterborough County OPP got a call from someone who fell victim to a recent scam. On March 11, 2026, the victim received a call from someone they thought was from their bank. The caller told them that their credit card had been used fraudulently in another province. They were then instructed to take both their credit and debit cards, put them in an envelope, and write a reference number on it. They were told to leave the envelope somewhere for collection as part of the bank’s investigation. Around 11:30 p. m., someone showed up at their home and picked up the envelope.

The next day, the victim received another call from the same person asking various personal questions that seemed necessary for the bank’s investigation. Later on, it was discovered that over $14,000 had been taken from the victim’s account.

A similar case was reported on March 5, 2026. In this instance, an individual got a call from someone claiming to be with their bank who convinced them to cut up their cards and said they would send someone to collect them. A person came to their house, took away the cut-up cards and left. After realizing it was a scam, the complainant contacted their bank and canceled all cards. Luckily, they managed to save their money.

Here are some things you should keep in mind…

Don’t trust caller ID since it can be faked to look like it’s your bank. No bank will ever ask for your card/chip or send someone to collect it. If you receive such a call, hang up and reach out to your bank using the phone number on your card. The bank won’t ask you for your PIN or personal details over the phone.

OPP encourages everyone to stay alert and report any fraud attempts or suspicious activities involving contractors. If you think you’ve been targeted by a scam, get in touch with OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

Peterborough County OPP appreciates your role in helping create safer communities. If you have information about any illegal activity, please check out Crime Stoppers at: stopcrimehere. ca or call 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
