A driver from Mississauga has been charged with child abandonment following a traffic stop on an Ontario highway.

The Ontario Provincial Police reported that the driver was pulled over on Highway 11 north in Oro-Medonte Township around 8 p. m. on July 8. This area is located northwest of Barrie.

While enforcing traffic laws, police allege the driver was exceeding the speed limit.

During the stop, an officer discovered two young children in the car who were not safely secured in approved child restraint systems, according to the OPP.

A 27-year-old woman from Mississauga is facing multiple charges, including impaired driving, two counts of child abandonment, and dangerous operation of a vehicle.

The Canadian Criminal Code states that charges for child abandonment can be filed against anyone who “unlawfully abandons or exposes a child who is under the age of ten years, so that its life is or is likely to be endangered or its health is or is likely to be permanently injured.”

Authorities mentioned that they won’t release the name of the accused to protect the identities of the children involved.

The individual has been released from custody and is set to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia next month.

The OPP reminds drivers that impaired driving continues to be one of the top causes of fatal incidents on Canadian roads. It’s also crucial for drivers to ensure that all passengers, especially children, are properly restrained in approved child seats and seatbelts before hitting the road.

If you suspect someone is driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, call 911 right away. When reporting a suspected impaired driver, provide as much detail as possible, including vehicle description, license plate number, and direction they’re heading.
