Residents in the Shallow Lake area might notice some changes to their tap water during regular maintenance starting Monday. The Ontario Clean Water Agency will be conducting its annual fire hydrant testing and flushing of water mains across the local distribution system to help maintain clean and reliable drinking water for everyone.

The Municipality of Georgian Bluffs has announced that this scheduled work will kick off on Monday, August 24, and continue through Friday, September 18, 2026.

This standard procedure is a vital part of the municipality’s overall approach to water management. Normally, drinking water flows slowly through municipal pipes, which can lead to fine sediment settling over time. By opening up fire hydrants to flush out the mains, crews temporarily boost the speed of the water flow to remove these accumulated deposits and ensure good water quality.

During this four-week maintenance period, local homes and businesses may experience some temporary changes in their service, such as reduced water pressure or slight discoloration in their supply. If residents see discolored water coming from their tap, they are encouraged to run their cold water faucets for about four to five minutes until it runs clear again.

It’s important not to use hot water while clearing this up to keep sediment out of your water heaters. Residents should also wait until the water is clear before doing laundry to avoid any possible stains on clothing.

If community members have questions or need more information about the flushing program, they can reach out directly to the Ontario Clean Water Agency at 519-483-3555 or contact the Township of Georgian Bluffs at 519-376-2729.
