Residents in the Shallow Lake area might notice some changes to their tap water during routine maintenance starting on Monday. The Ontario Clean Water Agency will be conducting its annual fire hydrant testing and flushing of the water mains across the local distribution network to help ensure safe and reliable drinking water for everyone.

The Municipality of Georgian Bluffs has announced that this scheduled maintenance will begin on Monday, August 24, and is expected to last until Friday, September 18, 2026.

This regular process is a key part of the municipality’s overall water management strategies. Normally, drinking water flows slowly through municipal pipes, which allows fine sediment to build up over time. By opening the fire hydrants for flushing, crews can temporarily boost the water flow speed to remove these accumulated deposits and maintain good water quality.

During this four-week maintenance period, local homes and businesses may experience temporary changes in their utility service such as lower water pressure or slight discoloration in their supply. If residents notice discolored water coming from their taps, they should run cold water faucets for four to five minutes until it runs clear again.

It’s best to avoid using hot water during this brief clearing process to keep sediment from getting into water heaters, and laundry should be postponed until the clarity of the water is fully restored to prevent possible staining on clothes.

Community members with questions or who need further assistance regarding the flushing program can contact the Ontario Clean Water Agency at 519-483-3555 or reach out to the Township of Georgian Bluffs at 519-376-2729.
