The City of Barrie is moving forward with its plans to encourage new development in the defence, security, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing sectors after an appeal regarding a zoning by-law amendment was dropped.
Council has approved Zoning By-law 2026-076 as part of the Mayor’s Direction to foster the growth of defence-related industries in Barrie. This amendment was later appealed to the Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT).
The appellant has since retracted the appeal, and the OLT has confirmed that the issue is resolved. Council’s approval of the zoning amendment can now move ahead as finalized and binding.
The city states this decision opens up opportunities for businesses that support Canada’s defence requirements and align with Ontario’s Defence Industrial Strategy.
Barrie aims to expand its presence in defence, security, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing as part of its overall economic development strategy.
Officials indicate that these sectors could boost the local economy, create jobs, and enhance Barrie’s role in industries deemed strategically important to both Canada and Ontario.
This zoning amendment follows collaborative efforts by city staff and economic development partners designed to position Barrie attractively for new businesses while supporting growth among existing ones.
