For over five years, Michelle Strzalkowski worked in sales at Brock Street Brewing Company in Whitby, located on the eastern edge of the Greater Toronto Area. She would reach out to LCBO locations, some as far away as Thunder Bay, to get their beers on store shelves and also managed local deliveries.
However, like many small breweries, Brock Street faced challenges. Last fall, Ms. Strzalkowski discussed the situation with a colleague and their financial struggles.
He mentioned a way for her to make some extra money if she was interested. There was a new facility down the street where she could sell part of her blood called plasma. Each donation would earn her between $30 and $100, plus he’d receive a bonus for referring her.

A few weeks later, the brewery shut down. Ms. Strzalkowski and her husband Spencer Smith, who also worked there, lost their jobs.
In the following months, while searching for new work, they decided to start selling their plasma. Ms. Strzalkowski estimates she’s visited the Whitby collection center at least 10 times so far this year.
She said it’s been beneficial for her and “for other people getting my plasma who need it, it’s obviously beneficial.”
Mr. Smith admitted that he doesn’t like needles but mentioned they’ll likely continue donating plasma even after finding new jobs.
“We’re not in an economy where you can leave anything on the table anymore,” he said.
Paying individuals for their plasma and using that protein-rich liquid to create pharmaceutical products is now a multibillion-dollar industry globally. The demand for these medications is increasing as they are more frequently used to support patients with acquired immune deficiencies like those undergoing cancer treatment. Commercial collection has mainly been operating in the United States along with a few other countries such as Germany and Egypt.
Now it’s made its way to Canada.

For nearly three decades outside Quebec, Canada’s blood and plasma collection has largely been managed by Canadian Blood Services (CBS), which was established following the tainted blood scandal of the 1980s based on principles that donors wouldn’t be paid.
Then in 2022, CBS made an unprecedented 15-year agreement with Grifols, a global leader in this field that has supplied CBS with plasma-derived drugs for 30 years. In this new arrangement, CBS and Grifols aimed to boost domestic collection since CBS claimed it was essential to meet growing demand.
Grifols purchased a factory in Montreal along with several existing for-profit collection sites throughout Canada. Their partnership allowed them to bypass Ontario’s prohibition against paying donors by acting as CBS’s “agent.” Now Grifols operates 17 sites nationwide and views Canada as a significant market opportunity.
However, recent events have shaken confidence due to two donor fatalities occurring recently in Winnipeg. Health Canada stated there wasn’t any identified link between these deaths and donations; however, conditions were imposed on Grifols’ licenses raising questions about donor screening procedures and donation frequency limits.

Beyond safety , however , there’s still an important question : is it right or wrong to pay people for their blood ? And if someone needs money , what does that mean about our ethics if we don’t let them ?
To truly grasp what donating plasma involves , I wanted first-hand experience myself. I opted for a place where I wouldn’t be compensated.On one recent weekday , accompanied by a photographer , I went out to visit a Canadian Blood Services collection center situated in Toronto’s east end. The clinic appeared as an unremarkable grey building near Boston Pizza within an industrial area just off Scarborough’s Golden Mile.Upon arrival , I registered at reception then filled out a health questionnaire using small touchscreen technology. Questions included: Am I feeling well today? Have I had rabies vaccinations within past year? Have I received money or drugs through sexual acts?After completing these steps , A nurse swiftly led me into examination room.
