Fall colours in Ontario for 2026 might show up a bit later than they did in 2025 – and with this year’s above-average rainfall, the display could be even more striking and beautiful.

In Muskoka, peak maple colours are expected between Oct. 4 and 8, followed by a “golden encore” from Oct. 9 to 18. The early fall colour viewing is projected from Sept. 20 to Oct. 3.

“These dates for 2026 are our best estimates for when to catch the fall colours this year. Keep in mind, these are just educated guesses based on past trends,” said Discover Muskoka’s fall colour report. “Many factors influence when the fall colours will look their best for viewing, and these conditions and dates may shift slightly each year.”

An overnight temperature of 3 C in Algonquin Park indicates that colour change is on its way. According to Friends of Algonquin Park (FOAP), the average peak for fall colours there is Sept. 27.

When do Colours Peak in Algonquin Provincial Park?

Ontario Parks spokesperson Dave Hunt noted that orange and red hues usually reach their peak in late September at parks like Restoule, Bonnechere, and Algonquin.

Hunt mentioned that the best displays of fall colours typically occur from mid-September to mid-October across much of the province.

In other areas such as Killbear, colour peaks around Thanksgiving weekend and stays vibrant through October thanks to the “golden glow” of American beech trees.

Ontario fall colours may be more vibrant in 2026. Here’ s where to catch the best views

Are Fall Colours Starting to Appear in Algonquin Park?

According to FOAP, hints of autumn colour changes are beginning to show, with signs of what’s coming next.

“Algonquin Park bursts with bright red, orange, and yellow hues for about a month each fall,” it states.

The overnight temperature at Algonquin Park’s east gate dropped to 3 C on Sept. 11.

This cooler temperature along with shorter daylight hours helps encourage trees as they prepare for winter,” reports FOAP.

Muskoka Fall Colour Updates

Discover Muskoka has started reporting changes in Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, and Huntsville.

You can find updates on colour changes online as the leaves continue to shift.

When Do Leaves Change Colour in Ontario?

Ontario arborist Erik Benneter predicts that leaf colour will likely start appearing later than last year – but they could be more vivid due to a wet summer.

“This year’s rainfall has been above average; therefore we should see leaf change occurring closer to typical timing,” said Benneter an ISA-certified arborist with Davey Tree based out of Ontario.

Last year’s lower rainfall caused stress on trees leading them to change colour and drop leaves earlier than usual,” he explained.

Generally speaking leaves start changing around late September into early October within Toronto area; elsewhere across Ontario mid-September until mid-October is typical.
