The renovation of Whitby’s Old Town Hall is now finished, as confirmed by the council.

This £1.3m project included repairs to the building’s clock tower and roof, along with restoring its stonework and mortar.

The first floor, which hasn’t been used in nearly ten years, has also been upgraded and modernized for events.

Market traders, who were temporarily moved to the Dock End area during construction, are expected to return just in time for the August Bank Holiday weekend, according to North Yorkshire Council.

This project has ensured the future of the Grade II* listed building, which showed additional damage once work began in 2025, said a spokesperson for the authority.

Deputy leader Mark Crane said: “The completion of this project is fantastic news for Whitby and everyone who cares about the town’s rich heritage.”

“We hope this can attract more visitors to the town, driving footfall and providing a boost for local businesses and the wider economy.”

“Without this intervention, the condition of the building would have continued to deteriorate, putting an important part of the town’s history at risk.”

Funding for this project came from money awarded to Whitby through the government’s Towns Fund as well as contributions from the council.

An official opening event where locals can tour the newly renovated Old Town Hall is being planned, with details expected in upcoming weeks from a council spokesperson.
