Christmas cards are a way of sharing holiday cheer, connecting with loved ones and spreading goodwill.

I haven’t received a card that I thought was offensive, nor have I sent any that could be taken that way. Christmas cards can vary from those with serious messages reflecting the season’s true meaning to those designed just to make you smile.

<p However, not everyone found the humor in the card sent out this year by Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Bobbi Ann Brady. Former Norfolk County Mayor Dennis Travale was one person who had a problem with it.

I heard about the controversy surrounding the card before I finally got to see it for myself. After checking it out online, I realized the fuss was really over nothing.

Brady’s Christmas cards usually have a fun vibe. This year’s card showed her sitting on a backward-facing chair in colorful festive pajamas while holding a coffee mug that said, “Naughty. Nice. I tried.” To me, there was nothing inappropriate about it at all.

Evidently, the former mayor took issue with how Brady’s pajamas fit and her pose on the chair, suggesting it looked “suggestive.” But other than her covered legs, everything else was hidden by the back of the chair-just her face and hands were visible. People sit like this every day; it’s just an easygoing way to relax while resting your chin on the back of a chair. There’s nothing wrong with that.

Travale was quoted in media asking how Brady’s pose could possibly connect to Christ’s birth. It doesn’t directly relate; however, we should remember that Christmas is observed both religiously and secularly. The secular side leads to all sorts of funny cards available in stores everywhere today. Brady’s personal card fits right into this lighthearted spirit of the season.

P eople in prominent positions have just as much right as anyone else to let loose sometimes and show they’re human too-and have some fun! That’s all this was meant to be; there shouldn’t have been such drama over it at all.

Brady has mentioned that being an elected official doesn’t mean you lose your individuality or personality either. When someone gets elected , they shouldn’t have to act stiff and serious all day every day throughout their term.

Christmas is supposed to be joyful , and that’s exactly what this card represented. Instead , we’ve made something small into something big. I’m sure we won’t hear much more about this moving forward.

This year’s card received approval from the Legislative Assembly , and previous recipients have enjoyed receiving them , looking forward to something unique and entertaining each time.

Maybe – hint , hint – I can join her mailing list next year so I can enjoy her festive creativity too.
