Tillsonburg’s yearly First Responders Hockey Game is scheduled for April 25 to support Parkwood Institute in London.

The town council approved waiving the ice time fee for this game, which is a friendly competition between Tillsonburg Fire Services and the OPP Tillsonburg detachment.

Tillsonburg fire platoon Chief Tony Heitkamp mentioned that Parkwood Institute holds “deep meaning” for all involved.

“As first responders, we are often on the front lines of traumatic incidents,” Heitkamp said. “Many individuals we serve are transported to Victoria Hospital with life-altering injuries, and their recovery journey frequently continues at Parkwood Hospital.

“This facility plays a vital role in rehabilitation, providing care for patients facing significant physical and emotional challenges. Nearly every one of us knows someone, whether a patient, colleague, or community member, whose life has been impacted by the care they received there.”

Heitkamp stated that by eliminating the cost of ice time, more proceeds can directly benefit the facility.

“This support from the Town would not only enhance the success of the event but also demonstrate a shared commitment to community well-being and support for those recovering from serious injuries,” he added.

“This charity game also presents an opportunity to bring the community together in a positive and engaging way while supporting local first responders and contributing to a meaningful cause.”

A free family skate will be offered before the big game starting at 3 p. m. at the Tillsonburg Community Centre. Tickets will be available at the door as well as in advance (details will be posted on both fire and OPP social media accounts). Those interested in tickets or making a donation can call Tillsonburg Fire Services at 519-688-3009 ext.4900.

Funding for this event will come from the town’s tax rate stabilization reserve.

“The firefighters better be on their best behaviour because the officials will be buckling down,” said Coun. Chris Parker, who will referee during the game. “This is a great event, and I look forward to having the opportunity to be part of it.”

The Clock Tower repairs estimated at $400k

The Tillsonburg Clock Tower is about to undergo an essential upgrade costing nearly $400,000.

A recent study revealed that much of the brick on both south and west sides of the tower are in “very poor condition.” The report also noted saturation of both exterior brick and interior concrete block with signs of deterioration visible on interior block as well.

“The lack of moisture barrier and internal climate control results in water intrusion and prevents that water from evaporating which causes deterioration of masonry due to expansion from freezing,” explained Adam Kannawin’s report, manager of parks and facilities.

<p“To fix water intrusion issues along with further damage to interior structural block it’s recommended that we replace exterior brick while adding moisture barriers and air space between inner and outer masonry.”

The report also suggested roof repairs along with replacing windows and doors. All these repairs were included in town’s ten-year capital plan; although confirmed by consultants that they could happen gradually; it was advised all work should occur within two years. The whole project is estimated around $394,000 (net after refundable HST).

“It’s understood that budget estimates for masonry repairs exceed current approval; however with competitive bidding we can find more affordable pricing,” Kannawin noted.
Town staff plans to apply for funding through Rural Ontario Development Program offering up to 35 percent cost sharing; results from applications are expected by August this year.
“If successful with grant application we’ll present follow-up report detailing funding options needed due to combined project shortfall,” Kannawin wrote.
“We’d see additional savings if these projects were done simultaneously.”
Should town miss out on funding roof repair plus window/door replacements would then be scheduled under ten-year capital plan for 2027.
