The Ontario Trillium Foundation has given a three-year grant of $245,000 to the York Simcoe Learning Disabilities Association. This funding will help expand their program into Simcoe County and improve the curriculum to better support student success.
The Learning Disabilities Association of York Simcoe (LDAYS) has made changes to its So AR program – which helps students with learning disabilities and ADHD understand their conditions and create personalized strategies that fit their unique ways of learning – after being awarded a Grow grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF).
“LDAYS is.. empowering those with learning disabilities to succeed in every area of life. I am proud to applaud LDAYS’s great work and this funding provided through the Ontario Trillium Foundation. This grant will help students access tools, guidance, and individualized support to overcome barriers and thrive,” said Daisy Wai, MPP for Richmond Hill, in a news release after visiting the facility this week.
The So AR (Some Assembly Required) program aims to help students diagnosed primarily with learning disabilities and/or ADHD develop essential life skills needed for academic and career success.
The funds from this grant, awarded earlier this year, are being used to assist with staffing and administrative expenses as well as purchasing supplies for the program over the next three years, according to the release.
This funding is allowing the program to grow in Simcoe County while also developing a more streamlined curriculum. With support from clinical psychologists, they are working on enhancing student outcomes through interactive learning methods that foster deeper engagement along with stronger emotional, social, and leadership skills necessary for transitioning out of high school successfully.
“The impact of this Ontario Trillium Foundation grant cannot be overstated,” said Helga Sirola, executive director of LDAYS. “In 2023, LDAYS expanded the scope of our services to better support communities in Simcoe County. To resume essential services for our most vulnerable clients in the Simcoe community, we had to make unexpected but necessary investments. This grant is making it possible for us to meet those challenges head-on and continue delivering vital support where it’s needed.”
