If you’re looking to settle down in a larger city or municipality in Ontario without facing high property taxes, Chatham-Kent (CK) is your top choice.

BMA Management Consulting has recently released its annual report comparing communities throughout the province. The report covers aspects like taxes, residential fees, and more.

More than 100 communities participated, including 31 with populations exceeding 100,000. CK falls into this larger group, boasting a population of just over 113,000.

In terms of property taxes, the report calculated the tax bill for a single-storey home if it were built in each community. CK came out on top at $3,904, marking the lowest rate among the 31 large municipalities.

Windsor was next at $3,968, followed by Greater Sudbury at $4,077.

Among all 128 communities included in the study, CK ranked 57th overall.

CK Mayor Darrin Canniff shared with CK News Today that this reinforces his view that the municipality has consistently been one of the more affordable places to live among major communities.

“This was an independent study. We had nothing to do with how it was accumulated. They do the comparison,” he said.

CK also performed well in other categories. This includes residential costs which combine property taxes and water/wastewater fees; here, CK landed in the 25th percentile.

“One of every four [communities] would be lower and three of every four [communities] would be higher,” explained Canniff.

The report pointed out some areas that Canniff wants to see improvements in. One issue is the aging infrastructure within the municipality.

“How many new buildings do we have? Not many,” added Canniff.

For him, replacing outdated buildings and sewers could save significant money over time by keeping maintenance costs low.
