A man from Peterborough is dealing with a bunch of provincial charges after police say he tried to use paper license plates-held in place with a plastic sleeve and packing tape-as if they were real.

Traffic Services officers stopped the 45‑year‑old driver around 10:15 a. m. on January 10, near Romaine Street and Park Street. Police reported that the stop happened when they discovered the vehicle’s license plate was registered to an entirely different car located in Mississauga.

That was the first warning sign.

A closer inspection showed the second issue: those weren’t actual plates at all. According to investigators, the driver had created makeshift paper plates, placed them into a plastic cover, and taped them onto his vehicle.

The driver now faces multiple charges, including using a plate not authorized for that vehicle, using a plate not compliant with regulations, failing to apply for a permit upon becoming an owner, and driving a motor vehicle on a highway without insurance.

The court date set for him is March 23, 2026.

While police didn’t comment on how well-made the paper plates were, they pointed out that homemade tags-regardless of how neatly they are put together-don’t fulfill Ontario’s legal standards.
