This funding will help local housing, jobs, and economic growth.

Major upgrades to outdated water infrastructure, along with new support from the Government of Ontario, are allowing municipalities in Northumberland – Peterborough South to better prepare for the future. Today, MPP David Piccini and Minister Todd Mc Carthy, Acting Minister of Infrastructure announced that the Ontario government is investing $17,239,944 to construct, enhance, and renovate water infrastructure in Northumberland and the township of Asphodel-Norwood.

The funds come from the province’s Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program’s Health and Safety Water Stream (MHIP-HSWS), which has increased by $700 million for a total of $875 million aimed at ensuring access to safe drinking water while also supporting housing initiatives and job creation as well as protecting communities during extreme weather events.

“Our government is dedicated to providing communities with the vital infrastructure they need to grow and prosper,” said David Piccini, MPP for Northumberland-Peterborough South. “By investing in modern and dependable water systems, we’re fostering housing development, bolstering good local jobs, and giving small rural municipalities the confidence they need to plan ahead.”

The following municipalities will benefit from funding through MHIP-HSWS:

The Township of Cramahe will receive $6,038,286 for their Gravity Sewer Expansion and Replacement Project.

“This grant is essential for larger plans that ensure Cramahe Township’s economic health and safety,” said Mandy Martin, Mayor of Cramahe. “It serves as a catalyst for stable water service expansion in our industrial park and nearby areas. Growth in both industrial and residential sectors will benefit not just our municipality but also the county and province.”

The Municipality of Trent Hills plans to use $2,921,513 in funding for reconstructing Tanner Rd., Parkview Blvd., Gair Street, and Ibey Court.

“The Tanner Road project illustrates what can happen when different levels of government collaborate,” said Bob Crate, Mayor of Trent Hills. “This provincial partnership enables smaller municipalities like ours to address crucial infrastructure updates that would otherwise take extensive planning or difficult trade-offs with other community needs. We appreciate the Government of Ontario’s investment in Trent Hills.”

The Township of Asphodel-Norwood will allocate $1,111,342 toward rehabilitation efforts on Highway 7 water services along with necessary watermain upgrades.

“This assistance means a lot to our community,” said Patrick Wilford, Mayor of Asphodel-Norwood.

“We thank the Province of Ontario for helping us move forward with critical improvements in a way that’s cost-effective while considering residents’ needs as well as those of local businesses.”

Moreover, the Municipality of Port Hope will get up to $7,168,803 for their Pressure Zone 1 Croft Street Water Tower – Phase 2 construction project.

“This initiative strengthens our community’s essential infrastructure while setting Port Hope up for long-term success,” stated Olena Hankivsky, Mayor of Municipality of Port Hope. “Thanks to this provincial investment we’re taking responsible steps toward public safety while promoting stability in housing and sustainability overall. I appreciate the Province’s commitment towards our future.”

This funding forms part of a historic $4 billion investment into the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program (MHIP), included within Ontario’s ambitious $236 billion capital plan aimed at enhancing transit systems alongside highways while improving hospitals schools as well as water infrastructures required for new housing developments.

“As we navigate through uncertain economic times along with unwarranted U. S tariffs; our government is safeguarding Ontario by investing into important infrastructures driving growth creating jobs while reinforcing communities,” explained Todd Mc Carthy acting Minister Of Infrastructure. “With our landmark four billion dollar municipal Housing Infrastructure program we’re empowering municipalities First Nations alike supplying them necessary tools needed getting shovels moving building stronger communities Our investments promise more homes modernizing aging watersystems laying foundation lasting prosperity throughout ontario.”
