The province is set to raise the speed limit in certain areas of Highway 402.
Starting July 31, 2026, drivers will be able to travel at 110 kilometres an hour from Waterworks Road to 350 metres east of Colborne Road in Sarnia, and on a brief stretch between Highway 401 and White Oak Road in London.
Back in 2022, the Ford government increased the speed limit along the 402 from Waterworks Road to London to 110km/h after a pilot program in 2019.
In a press release, Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria mentioned that this change aims to help drivers reach their destinations quicker and safely.
“We’re going to keep supporting commuters, workers and businesses by investing in our $31 billion plan to build and expand roads and highways, so we can get people and goods moving across Ontario and keep workers on the job,” Sarkaria said.
Other roads that will see an increase in speed limits by the end of September include the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) as well as parts of Highways 400, 401, 403, 416, and 417.
Once these changes take effect, nearly 89 percent of Ontario’s highway network will have a posted speed limit of 110 km/hour, up from just 43 percent.
The province noted that with this new speed limit implemented, drivers traveling from Sarnia to Toronto could save close to 20 minutes.
