Workers at a Starbucks in downtown Hamilton have officially joined the United Steelworkers union (USW) in Canada.
The team at the Starbucks located at 112 King St. E. organized their union after reaching out to the USW.
In a vote overseen by the labour ministry, these employees opted to become part of the USW, which already represents workers at various Starbucks locations across Ontario and Western Canada.
“The workers in Hamilton chose the USW to help address issues and concerns that are similar to what we’ve heard from other Starbucks partners who successfully negotiated collective agreements after joining our union,” said Anita Bryan, coordinator of USW District 6 (representing Ontario and Atlantic Canada).
Concerns raised by the Hamilton staff include health and safety issues, time and attendance policies, insufficient seniority recognition, limited advancement opportunities, and a clear wage structure along with solid benefits.
“The next stage for these members will be to elect their bargaining committee and prepare for contract negotiations. Our union will stand by these workers and provide the support and resources they need to negotiate their first collective agreement,” said USW Organizer Meg Grimes.
