Oshawa’s Convergence Festival Grows for Its Fourth Year

When the first Convergence Art and Music Festival filled Oshawa’s downtown streets in 2023, Krista Licsi wasn’t sure what to expect from locals and visitors, but she had a clear goal: “an extraordinary experience where art and music seamlessly merge, creating an atmosphere of celebration, creativity, and unity.”

A big dose of good vibes, in other words.

With nearly 15,000 attendees that first year, including over a thousand in the parking lot of Avanti’s restaurant to catch the Sheepdogs on the main stage and with crowds spilling onto King Street like ripples on a calm northern lake, it seems Licsi and her Oshawa Tourism team delivered exactly what everyone wanted.

The festival turned downtown into a lively center of creativity, showcasing a diverse array of artists and musicians across different genres. It also included pro wrestling at Four Corners, a Punk Rock Flea Market, Nerd Alley, unique art exhibits ranging from quirky to grandiose, music panels featuring documentaries – including an interview with the creator behind ‘Born to Be Wild,’ an anthem for many – along with an international street food alley.

All for free.

Mission accomplished – not bad for a first attempt. Local music aficionado Will Mc Guirk declared it was truly a festival that could only happen in Oshawa.

“This is 100 per cent Oshawa and it’s something that can’t be duplicated anywhere else,” Mc Guirk reflected from his downtown store on that September day in 2023 while revelers outside enjoyed the festivities.

A creation of the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce’s Oshawa Tourism division, the Convergence Music & Art Festival expanded significantly in its second year. Almost 24,000 visitors came from all over the GTA for another day filled with music, art and positive vibes.

In its third year, after adding a hip-hop focused pre-festival day on Friday to the lineup, attendance skyrocketed to more than 34,000.

This year marks its transition to a full two-day festival for the first time since inception,” Licsi mentioned.

“That extra day meant we could roughly double our offerings in music, art and programming compared to previous years.”

This year’s lineup reflects that growth as I Mother Earth headlines alongside hip-hop legend Maestro Fresh Wes on the main stage. They’ll be joined by Jeremie Albino and Reuben and the Dark featuring Bullhorn Singers.

The weekend will also spotlight artists like Skye Wallace, Ammoye and PRRR among many local performers.

“We also aimed to introduce some new features this year. A Durham Roller Derby Showcase is joining us this time around along with a live DJ competition as part of our nightlife programming. Both were inspired by local groups wanting more exposure.”

“At the same time we’re keeping those beloved elements that people have come to expect.”

The immersive art installation Dimension X returns for its second run alongside familiar favorites like Punk Rock Flea Market, Nerd Alley and live wrestling – all staples since the first festival kicked off.

“We’ve focused more this year on activities happening outside our main festival grounds,” she said. Organizers are collaborating with various venues throughout town such as Mc Laughlin Gallery BOND ST Event Centre Biltmore Theatre and Atria Bar and Grill for before-and-after parties.

“It gives people reasons to stick around downtown all weekend instead of just during our performances.”

The ‘People in space suits’

Oshawa has certainly needed plenty of those good vibes ever since Convergence emerged following pandemic challenges. In subsequent years after that initial celebration three years ago these joyful moments were precisely what locals experienced together.

The second year’s music shone brightly; from Kubla’s soulful sound through fierce punk tunes by Anti-Queens up until headliner TALK played their hit Runaway To Mars – drawing about 3k revelers out onto streets at night shows!

The artistic side shared equal importance too-the old bus terminal became home base for ARTBLOCK showcasing various works including crane sculpture called “Taking Flight” created by Ajax artist Geordie Lishman-a tribute honoring his late father Bill Lishman renowned sculptor/goose-whisperer-partake collection featured within terminal walls!

This portion hosted family-friendly activities galore making Centre Street zone bigger than previous festivals! Kids engaged hands-on experiences up close encounters-like meeting snakes (including Nugget who happens belong species king!) showcased via Reptilia exhibit further enhancing excitement level amongst families attending event!

The stretch between Simcoe avenues transformed into pop culture haven labeled Nerd Alley catering cosplayers retro gamers comic fans-all while supporting local vendors & storytelling talents resonating throughout community enriching cultural scene immensely! Massive turnout saw punks flea market spanning King street joined again by live action wrestlers stepping back into limelight!

Last summer brought yet another record-setting edition featuring Toronto indie/pop band Valley nominated thrice during JUNOS plus Aysanabee headlining Saturdays impressive lineup which highlighted several stages offering captivating immersive artwork interactive installations – family zones popping up every corner delighting attendees while tasty food trucks showcased culinary diversity surrounding urban landscape laid bare through vibrant entertainment options everywhere visible!

Licsi promoted now Executive Director within Chamber remarks joy watching so many newcomers-residents finally exploring gritty heart-of-downtown made organizing venture all worthwhile seeing happy faces enjoying every bit together added layer excitement levels created community engagement quality they’ve always dreamed about achieving!”

The Anti-Queens
