A house fire in Richmond Hill on Labour Day has left five individuals, including one child, critically injured and is now under investigation for potential arson, according to a police source who spoke with City News.
The fire was reported around 3:15 a. m. near Skywood Drive and Rolling Hill Road on Monday.
Jim Kettles from the Office of the Fire Marshall informed reporters at the scene that several people were trapped inside the house during the fire, and at least one was saved from a second-floor bedroom.
Paramedics assessed four adults and one child at the location before transporting them to various nearby hospitals for treatment. As of Monday afternoon, all five are reported to be in critical condition.
Authorities later confirmed that one of those affected is a child under 12 years old. The other four individuals taken to hospitals are between 20 and 70 years of age.
York Regional Police (YRP) have stated that officers found a jerry can at a nearby school.
“At this time it is being seized as a precaution. While it’s too early to confirm that it is related, its proximity to the fire is suspicious, and it will be investigated in full,” said a YRP spokesperson to City News.
Roads in the area remain closed while investigations continue.
