Officers from the Peterborough OPP have charged a person with impaired driving while on their own property.
On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, just after 1:30 p. m., Peterborough County OPP officers responded to a residence on Heritage Line in Otonabee-South Monaghan Township regarding a neighbor dispute. Upon arrival, officers were informed that the individual they wanted to speak with was currently operating a vehicle on the premises. Officers found the vehicle and, after talking to the driver, determined that he was under the influence of alcohol. The individual was arrested and taken to the Peterborough County OPP detachment for further testing.
James Mc Closkey (age 71) of Otonabee-South Monaghan, ON., was arrested and charged with:
• Operation while impaired
• Failure or refusal to comply with demand
The accused had his driver’s license suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days.
The accused is set to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on October 7, 2025.
The Criminal Code of Canada does not make a distinction between public and private property when it comes to impaired operation of a motor vehicle. A motor vehicle isn’t just limited to cars and trucks but can also include snowmobiles, ATVs, lawn tractors, golf carts, e-bikes, and other vehicles that aren’t purely human-powered.
The Peterborough County OPP remind drivers to think ahead when consuming alcohol or drugs. Use a designated driver, taxi service, public transit, or stay overnight. Any amount of alcohol or drugs can affect your ability to make good decisions.
