London police are looking into a single-vehicle crash that happened in the city’s southwest on Sunday afternoon, resulting in the death of a motorcyclist.

Emergency crews arrived at around 2:30 p. m. after receiving reports of the incident at the intersection of Colonel Talbot Road and Outer Drive, just north of Highway 402, according to Staff Sgt. Mike Potruff.

The injuries sustained by the motorcyclist were described as “catastrophic,” Potruff mentioned, and he was declared dead at the scene.

Colonel Talbot Road between Southland Drive and Highway 402 is expected to be closed for several more hours while officers conduct their investigation, Potruff stated early Sunday evening.

Outer Drive also remained shut down between Colonel Talbot Road and Patrick Street.

The road safety and identification teams from London police were still present around 6 p. m., marking areas where evidence was found scattered across the road and on nearby lawns.

Markers surrounded various motorcycle parts and a helmet.

A wooden post at the corner of Outer Drive showed signs of damage, which some neighbors claimed wasn’t there prior to today.

Residents Raise Concerns About Speeding

A number of residents on Outer Drive expressed that although they didn’t witness Sunday’s crash, speeding is a common issue on Colonel Talbot Road.

“People are just going fast. They come off the highway and they keep going,” said Kimberly Kritz, who visits her family on Outer Drive monthly.

Kritz noted that whenever she drives into town from Highway 402, she sees speeding firsthand.

“People are right on my tail when I slow down for the 60 zone, and they aren’t very happy with me when I’m going the speed limit,” she shared.

Other residents mentioned that they have to be extra careful when merging onto Colonel Talbot due to how fast motorcyclists and other drivers travel.

A few also noted they can hear motorcycles revving in their area.

“I feel frustrated because there’s a speed limit for a reason and people don’t understand there’s kids on the street,” Kritz said.

“My nephew is little and he’s still running around. The kids across the street are younger than that and running around. We should be able to have a peaceful neighborhood where we don’t have to worry about our kids because people are driving like it’s a highway.”

Potruff indicated it’s too soon in their investigation to determine if speed played a role in Sunday’s accident.

Cops Request Witnesses

The northbound exit ramp from Highway 402 was also closed early Sunday night; however, southbound traffic was allowed through.

Potruff said both ramp access points would remain closed for several more hours, advising drivers to avoid that area if possible.

The authorities are asking anyone who was near from 2 p. m. to 3 p. m. Sunday who either saw or has video footage of the crash to reach out to London police at (519) 661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
