The arrest in London of a man charged with second-degree murder in a deadly shooting at a college campus bar in Sarnia was quick and incident-free, Sarnia’s police chief says.

“For the past two weeks, our investigators have been pursuing every lead,” Chief Derek Davis said at a news conference Tuesday at Sarnia police headquarters.

Investigators had been searching for Kyaw (Chin) Doe, 24, of London since April 11, a day after a man opened fire at the Lion’s Den pub at Lambton College in Sarnia.

Dane Nisbet, 20, of Sarnia died in hospital and two former hockey teammates of his were injured.

Doe was tracked to a home on Ranchwood Cresent in northwest London by Sarnia police, Davis said.

Members of the London police emergency response team surrounded the home at about 6:20 p.m. on Monday, fired a projectile through a second-floor window, flew a drone inside the house and ordered Doe to exit, neighbours told a reporter.

Doe, who was described by police as armed and dangerous, emerged from the home and surrendered to police, ending a 17-day search that included a canvass of the London housing complex where he lived and the release of three photos of him.

He appeared Tuesday morning in Sarnia bail court and was remanded into custody, Davis said. Doe is scheduled to appear Friday in bail court.

No weapons were on Doe at the time, Davis said.

Police now believe a Glock model 45 handgun recovered earlier in the investigation was used in the shooting, Davis said.

The weapon, found in a hotel safe with a magazine inserted capable of holding 30 rounds, was likely smuggled into Canada from the United States, he said.

“Our team, working with the US ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) now knows that this weapon originated out of Georgia, where the last record of a transaction involving it occurred in February of 2022,” Davis said.

Police also provided an update on the two men injured in the shooting whom investigators haven’t identified.

The two men have been released from hospital and are expected to fully recover physically, but police aren’t saying more out of respect for their privacy, Det. Josh Mitchell said.

The two men played with Nisbet on the Mooretown Flags. Nisbet played for two full seasons and part of a third on the Junior C hockey team. He also played for the Sarnia Legionnaires and the North Middlesex Stars.

A former student in Lambton College’s fire school, he left the Stars this season and planned to join the Canadian military, the Flags general manager said.

About 800 mourners attended Nisbet’s funeral on April 17 at Temple Baptist Church. A Sarnia fire truck, police vehicles and two buses carrying family and friends followed the hearse to the church where pallbearers wearing jerseys with the name Dane on the front and Nisbet and the number 15 on the back carried the casket inside.

“It has been extremely difficult for the whole community . . . (and) a tragedy that never should have happened,” Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley said as he arrived at the church.

Family and friends attended Tuesday’s news conference and declined to speak to media.

“I think at this time they just ask that everyone respects their privacy,” Davis said.

A $50,000 Crime Stoppers reward, including money from the Sarnia police services board and Sarnia Coun. Bill Dennis, helped draw attention to the case, Davis said.

Police cannot disclose any information about tips to Crime Stoppers or whether they contributed to the arrest, he said.

“It’s a proud day for the Sarnia Police Service that we can bring justice to Dane and Dane’s family,” deputy chief Ron Hansen said.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing but no other arrests are expected, he said.

Investigators traced the travels of a group of two men and two women who went to two other bars in Sarnia before ending up at the Lion’s Den pub where the shooting took place at about 1 a.m. on April 10.

One man in the group was involved in altercations at all three spots that involved people he didn’t know, Hansen said.

“Just anybody that gave him that need to become aggressive,” Hansen said.

Oudom (Richard) Bun, 23, was arrested the day after the shooting at his home on Stonehenge Place in London and charged with second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder, police said.

Two 19-year-old Sarnia residents, Johnathan Osborne-Walsh and Ava-Leigh Lightheart, also are charged in the case. They both face multiple charges including accessory after the fact to murder.

Bun, Osborne-Walsh and Lightheart are still in custody and haven’t tried to get bail.

Lambton College was closed for several days after the shooting, and a tribute including hockey sticks and flowers was left outside the campus pub.
