GM Canada announced Wednesday that it’s investing $63 million to enhance “stamping operations” at its Oshawa facility.

This investment will help prepare for “building the next generation of gas-powered full-size pickups and enhancing capability in the service parts business,” the company stated in a news release.

“This additional investment underscores Oshawa’s importance in GM’s full-size truck portfolio,” Jack Uppal, president and managing director of GM Canada, said in a statement.

“With a long history of building trucks in Canada, the talented team at Oshawa Assembly will continue to play a critical role for years to come in delivering the pickups our customers know and trust.”

This announcement follows weeks after GM reduced one of three shifts at the Oshawa plant back in January, which was expected to lead to about 1,200 job losses across the supply chain.

GM spokesperson Ariane Souza Pereira informed that the $63 million isn’t tied to savings from those layoffs.

Pereira mentioned in an email that the funds will be utilized for stamping body sides for trucks and to “expand the plant’s capabilities to support our current and future product lineup.”

GM’s Oshawa Assembly manufactures Chevrolet Silverado light and heavy-duty full-size pickups on its two remaining shifts.
