The University of Guelph has named Dr. Julia Montgomery as the new dean of the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) for a five-year term starting June 15, 2026.

Why it matters: Montgomery has over twenty years of experience in academia, research, and veterinary practice.

“I am deeply humbled and genuinely excited to be joining the Ontario Veterinary College as its next dean,” Montgomery said. “Being entrusted with the leadership of Canada’s premier veterinary institution by the OVC community and the University of Guelph is a great honour.”

Recent disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz near Iran could worsen already expensive fertilizer supply for Ontario farmers.

Montgomery most recently worked as a professor and department head of veterinary clinical services at Oklahoma State University, after completing a postdoctoral fellowship in pulmonary pathobiology. Before that, she spent more than ten years on faculty at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan.

Her research centers on practical issues in equine medicine, such as asthma, metabolic syndrome, laminitis, and rehabilitation. She also investigates new technologies to improve both animal and human health, which aligns with the University of Guelph’s One Health Institute-a center dedicated to understanding how people, animals, and the environment are connected.

Montgomery earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover, Germany, along with a Ph D from the University of Prince Edward Island. She also completed a Large Animal Internal Medicine (LAIM) residency and is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in LAIM specialty.
