Vera Gertrude Maurer (nee Gottfried) was born on March 20, 1938 on her family’s farm near Neudorf, Saskatchewan to Martin and Paula (nee Miller) Gottfried. She was baptized on April 10, 1938 by Pastor Sterzer and confirmed May 6, 1951 by Pastor Buehler. Her confirmation verse was Romans 12:2 “Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this world, but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind. Then you will be able to know the will of God – what is good and is pleasing to Him and is perfect.” She attended Baber School and finished Grade 11 at Neudorf High School.
Vera married her soulmate, William Maurer on August 11, 1956 at Zion Lutheran Church where they renewed their vows for their golden anniversary. They raised four children together: Glenda, Karen, Leanne and Bradley.
Together they ran a farm in the Neudorf area. Alongside Dad, she milked cows, cared for chickens and tended a large garden. Vera also worked at Neudorf Post Office from 1975-1998 as an assistant before becoming local postmaster. She loved that job. Many days she balanced home life with work duties while ensuring there was always a hearty meal ready for her family. She was a dedicated wife and mother.
After retiring from farming, they moved to Neudorf where they enjoyed spending time with neighbors and friends as well as family gatherings. They were often seen walking across to church together or enjoying card games over coffee while visiting those who were shut-in.
The unexpected loss of their only son Brad in 2018 hit the family hard. They supported each other through this tough time while leaning heavily on their faith.
Together Willie and Vera loved visiting friends and relatives as well as traveling to community events. They made it a point every year to celebrate their wedding anniversary with a little road trip together without fail.
In 2019 they moved to Caleb Village in Melville where they made new friends and embraced their new lifestyle.
This changed sadly when Willie fell ill and passed away in October 2020.
Vera then moved into Helping Hands; even though she would often mention how much she missed “her Willie,” the staff welcomed her warmly like family.
She frequently shared her faith with them during her stay there.
The last seven months of her life were spent at St Paul Lutheran Home where staff cared for her lovingly like she was one of their own family members.
On February 10, 2026 she passed away peacefully surrounded by family just as she lived all those years before.
Vera was deeply appreciated by all who knew her including family members and friends alike.
She actively participated in Ladies Aid activities, sang in the church choir,.. She prayed nightly for her children along with nieces,.. Moreover,,she enjoyed curling-both participating and witnessing it happen-alongside puzzling and a few trips down to casinos.
Her cooking skills delighted many especially when she’d prepare “big perogies” each fall supper season! While residing within St Paul’s Home,, she often reminisced about missing out on utilizing any cookbooks or utensils that had previously belonged solely unto herself!
