Helmut Hitscherich passed away at Lakeview Manor, Beaverton on Monday March 23, 2026 at the age of 89 years.  He was the husband of the late Joyce (nee Kedie).  He is loved and remembered by his step-children Lynn Taylor (Jerry), Barry Judges (late Nan) and Pamela Carr (Robert), along with grandchildren Paul, Lee, Jamie, Kim, Ann, Daniel and Jennifer.

Helmut’s journey began in 1954 when he arrived at Toronto’s Union Station from Germany as an eager 18-year-old with an engineering trade under his belt. It was here that his sponsor greeted him before they headed to Holland Marsh to work in the fields.

He met my mother, who was the love of his life. Both shared a passion for dogs and together they ran a successful boarding kennel that bred German Shepherds and held obedience classes. Helmut even trained dogs for the Ontario Provincial Police. They thrived in this venture while also nurturing their other love-traveling around the world together.

Despite his busy schedule, Helmut always made time to be a wonderful grandpa to his grandchildren. After losing his beloved wife Joyce, he discovered a new passion for horses and trail riding. He became an active member of the OTR Association where he found like-minded friends who quickly turned into lifelong companions and fellow riders. Hosting many riding events at his home brought friends from both Canada and the USA together regularly. He often said “my house, my rules,” meaning there were no rules-just fun and good company. With a constant itch for travel, Helmut roamed all over Canada and the States with his trusty horse Smokey.

Helmut was always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need-and fortunately for him, there was never a shortage of people needing help. He embraced life fully and will be missed dearly by everyone lucky enough to have known him. Rest peacefully now with your first love; Joyce.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at Low & Low Funeral Home, 23 Main Street South, Uxbridge on Wednesday April 1, 2026 from 3:00 – 8:00 PM. A private interment will take place later on. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations to Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family. Friends are welcome to share memories or express condolences at www. lowandlow. ca.
