$25 Million Boost for TMU’s Medical School

Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) has been awarded $25 million in funding from the federal government to enhance the development of its School of Medicine located in Brampton, Ont., as revealed in the 2025-26 Budget presented earlier on Nov. 4.

This investment marks a significant achievement for TMU, the City of Brampton, and residents of the Peel region, highlighting the national relevance of this medical school aimed at tackling the shortage of physicians and improving access to primary care throughout Ontario and Canada.

This federal support builds upon the strong groundwork laid by the Province of Ontario’s leadership in establishing the School of Medicine and showcases ongoing teamwork among all levels of government to enhance access to healthcare and expand medical education.

TMU is very thankful for the advocacy and collaboration from Brampton’s federal Members of Parliament, whose dedication helped bring this initiative to life, as well as gratitude goes out to the federal Ministers of Finance, Health, and Infrastructure for acknowledging the school’s national significance and its potential impact.

A groundbreaking step in health care

“The federal government’s trust in TMU highlights what we already understand: That our approach to medical education – community-focused, accessibility-driven, and innovation-oriented – signifies a new era in Canadian health care,” stated TMU President and Vice-Chancellor Mohamed Lachemi.  

“This funding enables us to progress with determination, ensuring that our facilities align with our aspirations and meet the needs of our students, faculty, partners, and patients. We are grateful to Prime Minister Carney, Finance Minister Champagne, and the federal government for believing in our vision.”

Nurturing Canada’s newest medical institution

TMU officially kicked off its School of Medicine earlier in 2025 by welcoming its first class comprising 94 MD students along with 105 resident students. This marks it as the first new medical school established in over a century within the Greater Toronto Area.

The initial group of undergraduate medical learners was chosen from more than 6,400 applicants, showcasing some of the brightest future physicians.

The capital funding from the federal government reinforces TMU’s standing as an institution dedicated to reshaping medical education in Canada while addressing critical healthcare demands within underserved areas.
