Environment Canada reports that conditions are right for severe thunderstorms in London, Ont., which may bring large hail on Tuesday morning.

The agency has put out a severe thunderstorm watch for the London-Parkhill-Eastern Middlesex County area, with storms likely forming early this morning. The primary threats, according to meteorologist Yosef Mengesha, are strong winds and hail potentially as big as a toonie.

“So far we haven’t seen any reports, but that size of hail could damage property,” said Mengesha.

The storm is expected to begin anytime after 6:30 a. m., he mentioned. It might bring wind gusts up to 70 km/h along with 5 to 10 millimeters of rain before easing off in the afternoon.

Emergency Management Ontario is advising people to take cover right away if threatening weather approaches.

“When thunder roars, go indoors,” the agency cautioned, emphasizing that lightning causes injuries and fatalities among Canadians every year.

Tuesday will be overcast with a 40 percent chance of showers during the morning along with a risk of thunderstorms. Environment Canada expects daytime highs around 23 C, feeling more like 28 due to humidity.

Late Tuesday evening and overnight there will be a chance of more thunderstorms and an additional 5 to 10 mm of rain. Winds will calm down with a low temperature of 13 C.

Wednesday looks cloudy too, with a 60 percent chance of showers and another risk of thunderstorms alongside moderate winds and highs reaching up to 18 C.
