The Ontario government, through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), is putting $354,107 into two projects in Mississauga First Nation. This investment is part of a broader effort to enhance local infrastructure that builds strong and resilient communities in northern Ontario.

“Our government is happy to back the improvement of these vital community resources so they can remain safe and accessible for residents and visitors alike,” said George Pirie, Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth. “These investments show the significant role that the NOHFC continues to play throughout northern Ontario.”

Mississauga First Nation, along with the Town of Blind River, will receive $175,398 to renovate the Boom Camp Boat Launch by adding a retaining wall, fixing the cement launch pad, and improving signage. These upgrades will protect and enhance this key public resource while ensuring a safer and more accessible boat launch area for community members, Blind River residents, and tourists.

The NOHFC is also allocating $178,709 to Mississauga First Nation for renovations to their outdoor ice rink by installing a roof over the facility – enabling them to host both hockey games and recreational skating within their community. This new structure will allow for year-round use, transforming the rink into a multi-purpose facility that everyone can enjoy safely.

“Mississauga First Nation fully recognizes and supports the importance of strong partnerships across the North Shore. The collaboration with Blind River has been fruitful over recent years and has been strengthened by support from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund. The Boom Camp Boat Launch Project not only promotes tourism but also serves as an essential access point for annual biology studies, water safety initiatives, fishing activities, and more,” said Brent Niganobe, Chief of Mississauga First Nation. “The shoreline features a docking system that allows safe launches for canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards while providing a rest area. The outdoor rink in our community is designed with families and youth in mind. It will also function as a multi-use facility during off-seasons. We’re excited about hosting new public recreational events in this upgraded space. A big thank you to The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund for supporting this year-round asset.”

“Congratulations on your Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation funding for these community projects that are vital in bringing people together,” said Bill Rosenberg, Member of Provincial Parliament for Algoma – Manitoulin. “These enhancements will create welcoming spaces for events and gatherings for many years ahead.”

The Ontario government prioritizes investments through the NOHFC aimed at protecting northern industries and jobs while addressing challenges like U. S. tariffs or trade disruptions-securing fresh opportunities for sustainable growth in northern Ontario. This renewed approach enhances competitiveness ensuring that northern regions continue to be key players within Ontario’s economy. This initiative adds onto an extra $30 million investment over three years-bringing NOHFC’s total annual budget up to $110 million. Collectively, these efforts benefit communities both large and small-including Indigenous ones.
