As the results of election day come in, it’s evident that London stands out from many other large cities by heavily supporting incumbents, especially in the mayoral position.
London re-elected its mayor, joining Ottawa, Toronto, Vaughan, Brampton, and Kitchener. In contrast, other major cities like Mississauga and Hamilton, as well as nearby places such as Waterloo, Cambridge, Windsor, Chatham-Kent, and Sarnia decided to replace their incumbent mayors.
Is there something unique about London? Was it just a coincidence due to local factors? Or is there a broader trend happening among voters across the province? According to Western University political science professor Cameron Anderson, it’s a mix of all these elements.
