On December 7, voters in six federal ridings across Quebec, Ontario, and Saskatchewan will head to the polls following an announcement by Prime Minister Mark Carney on Sunday.

A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office indicates that byelections are scheduled for three ridings in Quebec: Laurier-Sainte-Marie, Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, and Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot-Acton. These seats were previously occupied by the Liberals, NDP, and Bloc Québécois respectively.

Guy Cormier, former CEO of Desjardins Group, will represent the Liberal Party in Laurier-Sainte-Marie.

“At such a pivotal moment for Québec and Canada, Guy will be a strong voice for the people of Laurier-Sainte-Marie and will work tirelessly alongside Mark Carney to build a stronger, more prosperous economy,” said Sachit Mehra, president of the Liberal Party of Canada in a statement released on Sunday.

The other byelections include Ontario’s Brantford-Brant South and Scarborough North, along with Yorkton-Melville in Saskatchewan.

The Scarborough North seat became available after Shaun Chen announced his resignation due to injuries from a car accident he sustained late last year. His recovery has made it difficult for him to travel to Ottawa regularly. Recently elected as city councillor in his ward, Chen defeated incumbent Jamaal Myers.

The Conservative Party previously held seats in Yorkton-Melville and Brantford-Brant South while Scarborough North was held by the Liberals.

Currently holding a majority government after winning three byelections earlier this year, Carney’s Liberals face opposition calls for change.

In a tweet on Sunday, Conservative Leader Pierre Pollievre urged Canadians to opt for a different direction. He emphasized that his party’s plan aims to save money, protect jobs, and reform immigration policies.

These byelections follow resignations from members of Parliament who left their posts for diplomatic roles or retirement.

Since the election in 2025, 13 out of 343 members have chosen to step down.

The prime minister is required to call an election between 11 and 180 days after a member resigns.
