The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been brought in following a traffic stop that led to a vehicle ending up in Lake Ontario.

On April 21, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were trying to pull over a vehicle around 10:55 p. m. on Bath Road in Lennox and Addington County, located about 50 kilometres west of Kingston. At some point, the vehicle veered into a ditch and then plunged into Lake Ontario, where it became submerged, according to officials.

The police are unsure how many people were inside the vehicle, as noted in their release.

A search and rescue operation for an unknown number of individuals is ongoing on Wednesday. This effort is being led by the Prince Edward County OPP Marine Unit, OPP Aviation Services, the OPP East Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement Team, the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit, along with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.

As a result of this incident, Highway 33 has been closed at County Road 21.

Ontario’s police watchdog has invoked its mandate regarding this case.

The SIU is responsible for investigating incidents involving officials that may have led to death, serious injury, sexual assault or firearm discharge at an individual. The SIU must publicly share the findings of its investigation.
