Police are looking for witnesses after a car crashed into the back of a transport truck on the shoulder of Highway 401 in Clarington Thursday afternoon, sending two people to the hospital – one with life-threatening injuries.
The OPP reported that a passenger vehicle hit the rear of a broken-down commercial motor vehicle transport truck that was parked on the right shoulder and partially in a live lane on the westbound side of the highway awaiting repairs just before 4 p. m. Thursday.
The accident took place just west of the Courtice Road exit as traffic was heading toward Oshawa.
The driver of the car suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was taken to a trauma center in Toronto while a passenger had serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Lakeridge Health Oshawa.
According to police, no injuries were reported by the driver of the transport truck.
Traffic was congested for hours due to the investigation, with officers eventually directing vehicles onto the shoulder to clear through the scene.
Social media updates from those caught in traffic who saw the wreck expressed hope for recovery for those injured as cars slowly moved past.
This year, there have been 254 fatalities from traffic accidents in Ontario, with speeding and aggressive driving being major factors, according to OPP. Seven people lost their lives on Ontario roads during last year’s Labour Day weekend.
